What is my birthstone?
Your birthstone is the stone assigned to the month you were born, so find your month in the chart below or use the finder above and type a birthday. A February 29 birthday is still in February, and the stone is amethyst.
Each month page covers the stone's meaning and history, the birth flower, and gift ideas at several budgets.
Why do some months have more than one birthstone?
Birthstone lists have grown over time, and several months now offer a choice of stones at different colors and price points. GIA notes that June, August and December each have three birthstones.
Lists also differ a little by organization. The American Gem Society chart includes bloodstone for March, sardonyx for August and zircon for December, while Jewelers of America lists blue topaz for December and does not list those three. Either is fine to use for a gift.
Where do the birthstone lists come from?
The official American birthstone list dates back to 1912, when it was established by the American National Retail Jewelers Association, which has become today's Jewelers of America. Stones such as spinel and tanzanite were added later.
Older traditions assigned stones in different ways, which is why some months still have an older alternate, like bloodstone for March or sardonyx for August.
What are birth flowers, and how do they fit in?
Birth flowers pair each month with a bloom, much like birthstones do. The Farmers' Almanac chart gives each month a primary and a secondary flower, from January's carnation and snowdrop to December's paperwhite narcissus and holly.
A bouquet in the birth flower alongside a birthstone piece makes a gift that feels personal without being complicated.

January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal, November topaz and December tanzanite.
What is the difference between modern and traditional birthstones?
The modern list is the standardized American list that began in 1912 and has been updated since, while older traditions assigned stones such as bloodstone and sardonyx to some months.
Which birthstone is for February 29?
A February 29 birthday is in February, so the birthstone is amethyst and the birth flowers are violet and primrose, the same as for any other February date.

Yes. A birthstone is a tradition, not a rule, and many people choose a stone for its color, meaning or a loved one's month rather than their own.
