White elephant: Gift Ideas (2026)

A white elephant swap is a game first and a gift exchange second. The best gift is the one people fight over, the one that gets stolen in round three and again in round seven. That means it has to read well from across the room and still be something an adult would take home happily. You don't know who'll end up with it, so play to the crowd. A party card game, a blanket shaped like a pizza, a squishy the size of a dinner plate. Funny is welcome. Crude isn't, since you might be swapping with your manager or your aunt. Skip anything that needs a size, and skip inside jokes only three people will get. This year, viral party card games, jumbo squishies and food shaped blankets are the gifts people keep reaching for, so those sit at the top. Keep it under $30 and wrap it in something that hides the shape.

How to pick

Start with the room. An office party wants something safe and silly. A group of old friends can handle more chaos. A family swap with kids watching needs something everyone can laugh at together. Think about the steal. The gift you want is the one people can understand in two seconds when it's unwrapped. A pizza blanket gets an instant laugh. A tiny Monopoly board gets people leaning in. A snack box gets passed around before the game's even over. Gifts that are fun and actually useful tend to win. Something the group can play that night is a strong move, since the game keeps going after the exchange ends. Watch the budget line. If the cap is $25, don't show up with a $30 gift. It throws off the game. If the cap is $30, spend close to it so your gift doesn't look like an afterthought. Wrap it well. A box inside a box, a bag that hides the shape, or heavy tape all add to the drama, and the drama is half the point. Keep anything with adult humor for a different crowd.

Frequently asked

What is a good white elephant gift that people will actually want?

Pick something funny that's also useful or playable. A food shaped throw blanket, a party card game or a big squishy all get a laugh and then get used. Gifts that the group can play with on the spot tend to get stolen the most, because everyone has already had fun with them.

What's the usual spending limit for a white elephant exchange?

Most groups set a cap between $20 and $30. Stick close to the limit, not far under it. Everything on this page comes in under $30, so you can pick by personality rather than price. If your group hasn't set a number, suggest one early so nobody feels awkward.

Can a white elephant gift be a joke gift?

Yes, as long as it's a joke the whole room can enjoy. Silly and playful is the spirit of the game. Leave out anything adult, crude or mean, since you won't know who goes home with it. A money scented candle gets a laugh without making anyone uncomfortable.

What white elephant gifts work for an office party?

Stick with things that are funny but clean. A tiny board game, a card game for the break room, a snack box or a scented candle with a cheeky theme all fit. Skip anything with innuendo or alcohol, since coworkers and managers will be swapping with each other.
