Group Gift Calculator: Split the Cost Fairly
Enter the gift price and the number of people, and this group gift calculator shows each person's share to the cent. When the total doesn't divide evenly, a few people pay one cent more so everything adds up exactly. You also get a message ready to copy.
Plan it together in Prezynt
How does the group gift calculator work?
Type the gift price, add any shipping, tax or card cost, and enter how many people are chipping in. The calculator divides the total in whole cents and shows each share.
No price yet? Leave it empty and enter an amount per person instead, and the calculator shows the total you'll collect. You can also let the organizer pay a smaller fixed amount.
Why do some people pay one cent more?
Money comes in whole cents, so a total like $125.04 can't split perfectly among 10 people. Four people pay $12.51 and six pay $12.50, which adds up to the exact total.
Showing that clearly means nobody is confused when the amounts differ by a penny, and the organizer isn't left short.
How do you collect the money once you have the numbers?
Copy the message the calculator writes, paste it into your group chat and ask people to send their share with Venmo. If you'd like the whole plan in one place, create an Event in Prezynt and invite everyone as co-gifters.
How much is normal to contribute to a group gift?
Common practice and rules of thumb, not survey data. Adjust for your group.

| Teacher from the class | $5 to $20 | Any amount is welcome. |
| Parent from siblings | $20 to $75 | Split equally or by means. |
| Wedding or baby from friends | $15 to $50 | Pool toward one registry item. |
Frequently asked
Is it rude to ask for a specific amount for a group gift?
No, as long as you explain what it's for and say any amount is okay. A suggested share makes it easier for people to join without guessing.
Should the organizer of a group gift pay the same share?
Not necessarily. Many groups let the organizer pay less since they handle the planning. Use the organizer option to set a smaller fixed amount.
What if someone can't afford the suggested amount?
Make joining optional and let people give what they can, or just sign the card. Keep contributions private so nobody feels singled out.
Does the calculator save or send my numbers anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and the names, prices and amounts you type are never stored or sent anywhere.
Who should hold the money for a group gift?
Usually the organizer, who collects shares with Venmo and buys the gift. Post the final total afterward so everyone can see where the money went.
