Christmas Gift Budget Calculator for Everyone on Your List
A Christmas gift budget calculator splits one total across everyone on your list. Enter what you can spend, add each person with their relationship and age, and the planner suggests a whole-dollar amount for each. Partners and kids get more than coworkers, the total never goes over, and you can edit any amount.

How much do people spend on holiday gifts?
In the National Retail Federation's 2025 holiday survey, shoppers planned to spend $890.49 per person on average, and $627.93 of that was for gifts for family and friends. The other $262.56 went to seasonal items like food, decorations and greeting cards.
For 2026, NRF forecasts that November and December retail sales will grow 4.2% over 2025 to $1.013 trillion. That is a total for the whole retail industry, not a per-person number, and NRF had not published a 2026 per-person gift figure when we checked on Oct 25, 2026.
Treat these as a reference point, not a target. The right number is the one you can spend without stress in January.
How do I set a Christmas gift budget?
Start with the total you can comfortably spend, then add your people and let the planner suggest who gets what.
- Type your total holiday gift budget in whole dollars.
- Add each person one at a time: a name if you like, their relationship and an age band. The age band fills in on its own and you can change it.
- Read each suggested amount. The planner sets it automatically from the person's relationship and age.
- Type your own number for anyone to lock it. The rest of the budget re-splits across everyone you haven't edited, and Reset to suggested undoes it.
- Tap Gift ideas for a person to see gift picks that fit them, or download, print or email the plan.
Why is there money left over?
Every suggested amount is rounded down to a whole dollar, so the plan can never add up to more than your budget. Any dollars that don't divide evenly show up as the leftover amount, and so do dollars you haven't assigned if you edit every person.
Use the leftover for wrapping, shipping or one more stocking stuffer. If your edited amounts add up to more than the budget, the planner says so and sets everyone else to $0 until you lower an amount or raise the total. Your list is saved in this browser only.
How should I split a holiday gift budget by relationship?
Suggested splits, not statistics. These are the planner's starting weights; kids get 25% more and teens 15% more than an adult in the same relationship. Edit any amount to fit your family.
| Relationship | Starting weight | Compared with a partner | When to adjust |
|---|
| Partner | 10 | Baseline | Raise it for an anniversary or milestone year |
| Child | 8 | 80% as much | Raise it for a big-ticket item they asked for |
| Parent | 7 | 70% as much | Lower it if you pool money with siblings for one gift |
| Sibling, grandparent or grandchild | 5 | 50% as much | Lower it if you draw names instead |
| Friend | 4 | 40% as much | Raise it for a best friend, lower it for a group exchange |
| Boss or other | 3 | 30% as much | Keep it modest and thoughtful |
| Coworker, teacher or neighbor | 2 | 20% as much | Match your office's gift-exchange limit |
Frequently asked
How much should I spend on Christmas gifts?
There is no single right number. In NRF's 2025 survey, shoppers planned about $627.93 per person on gifts, but your budget should start from what you can pay without borrowing. Enter your own total and the planner suggests an amount for each person.
Does the calculator save my list?
Yes, in this browser only. Your budget and people are kept in local storage on your device and are sent nowhere unless you choose to email the plan. If storage is blocked the planner still works for that visit, and the Clear button wipes what was saved.
Should I spend the same on everyone?
Most people don't. Closer relationships usually get a bigger share, so the planner suggests more for a partner or child than for a coworker. If you want equal amounts, type the same number for everyone.
Can I download, print or email my holiday gift budget?
Yes. Download a CSV to open in any spreadsheet app, use Print for a paper copy, or email the plan to yourself. Emailing sends your list to Prezynt only to deliver that one message, and you choose whether to also get gift ideas and tips.
What happens when I change one person's amount?
That amount is locked to the number you typed, and the rest of the budget re-splits across everyone you haven't edited. Use Reset to suggested on one person, or Reset all, to go back to the automatic split.
Can I use this planner for Hanukkah or other holidays?
Yes. The planner only splits a total across the people you add, so it works for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, birthdays in December or any season of giving.
